WE ARE the Coalition for Change. Formed to strategize and explore how community, business, and labor can come together to make sure that Washington is a place of opportunity and fairness for all.
As a Coalition, we are reexamining the age-old adage that “a rising tide lifts all boats.” In order to achieve fairness and opportunity for all Washingtonians we are moving beyond equality and centering equity in our work. Equality means each individual or group of people is given the same resources or opportunities. Equity recognizes that each person has different circumstances and allocates the exact resources and opportunities needed to reach an equal outcome. Racial equity is a process and an outcome. As an outcome, racial equity focuses on achieving equal outcomes for Black, Indigenous and People of Color (BIPOC*) relative to their white counterparts. As a process (to achieve this outcome), racial equity is about centering, affirming and respecting the leadership, perspectives, experiences and power of BIPOC from the beginning through the end of the process. WE ARE WORKING TOWARDS reversing the inequitable trends resulting from the passage I-200. We want more economic opportunities afforded to people of color, women, and small business owners through public employment and contracting. We want the population of Washington’s public universities to better reflect the state as a whole. By legally guaranteeing the right and responsibility of public institutions to actively recruit and retain employees and contractors, and create educational opportunities that reflect the diversity of our residents today and tomorrow. Through strategic approaches fairness and opportunity can be restored in Washington.
As a Coalition, equity for all is our north star, and our values and beliefs to restore opportunity and fairness for all should be codified into state law. We are committed to taking tangible, collective action, that promotes racial equity, to level the playing field for Washingtonians with the most urgent unmet needs, striving to make Washington a place where someone’s race, ethnicity, gender, or other status isn’t a generational determinant of their ability to thrive or share equitably in the prosperity afforded to our region.
JOIN US. We are a growing coalition of community, labor, and business organizations committed to equity and restoring opportunities for all Washingtonians.
